The family and I tried grinders west for a late lunch. I tried the meatball grinder which I would say was a little below average. Rest of the family went with pizza and cheesesteaks. They said they were good. The main reason for the low grade was the service. We waited forever for our waitress to take our order. Place wasn't busy and could see her visiting in back of restaurant. She then blamed someone else for not taking our order. Food was not worth the wait.

My friends and I were in town for a card tournament, and seeing as this place was close-by (and I'm a huge fan of 'DDD'), we decided to head there for some late-night eats and beer. First things first; this place, and the surrounding neighborhood, can look a little intimidating at night. Stick to well-lit sidewalks, and you should be ok! Secondly, this place is a dive bar; don't think it's anything but. However, the food here is amazing, and should definitely not be missed! As we walked towards Grinders, we heard an outdoor band playing. I guess this place is legendary in KC as a great place to catch local bands in their backyard, and tonight was no exception. As it had been in the upper-90's, with dew points in the 70's, nearly all day, it was still too hot and muggy outside, so we opted to stay inside. Because of that, I think we lucked out, because our waitress was very attentive and friendly. Their on-tap beer selection is quite good, and the whole thing was built by Grinder's owner, Stretch Rumaner. He's a legend in the world of 'DDD', and I asked our waitress if he was in the bar. She said, "He's around here somewhere; probably outside, enjoying the show." I held out hope that I would get to meet him, but if not, that's life sometimes. My friends and I just decided to get a little of everything and share it "buffet style". We ordered their Bengal Tiger Pizza (green sauce, tandoori chicken, crab meat and hearts of palm), an order of Krinkle-Cut Fries, and a South Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich. All of it was amazing! The pizza was as unique as the owner, and the philly steak sandwich was probably the best I've ever tried! Best of all, just as we were about to pay our bill, Stretch Rumaner walked by our table and said hi! Definitely a place to remember, and I will definitely be back the next time I'm in downtown Kansas City!

Grinders is definitely a funky fun 'get out of the office and maybe don't go back on a Friday' place to have lunch. Actually it doesn't have to be lunch and it doesn't even have to be Friday but the atmosphere is quirky and eclectic and I didn't want to leave after a really lovely Pear Salad and our servers choice of beers (IPA style, it was tasty). I've heard that shows here are fun (except for the Port A Pottys and that the people watching is ++. Although I'm a fan of live music, I'm a little over the hill for that much late night activity...but I've HEARD it's a blast. I would definitely go here again, soon...after reading the reviews, I have a couple of meals on my list to try!

Have been many times and the food was still good but that does not make up for the horrible services. Took to long to even be acknowledged then the waiter messed up a simple drink order for three. Once we received our drinks the waiter didn't return for 15 minutes. We then ordered our food, figuring everything would get better it did not. The food came out at different times and incorrect. First was the pork sliders, they were pretty good, then a calzone for one of other people in our party. The next item to come out was not the correct sandwich or sides, the waiter came to check 20 minutes later. We had also ordered a pizza and it never came. When the waiter came to check on us, 20 minutes later, I told him the sandwich was wrong and I still didn't have my pizza. Normally great food can make up for crappy service but the food was just okay and the service was pitiful. Luckily there are any other places in the area to eat.

I must not be "hip" enough to receive mildly decent service, but even if I were, Grinders is one of the haughtiest restaurants I have been to in Kansas City. The scene is fine when purchasing food or drinks at the window outside Grinders *during a show*, however, the service inside (show or not) has been constantly neglectful. I ordered a pretzel tonight with the rest of my table ordering pizza. Server forgot to put in my order AND 5 minutes before bringing out food, server told me pretzels were not being served. Waitress error? Kitchen error? Not the first time, definitely the last time. I suppose I should grow a mustache and gain tattoos if id like good service.

Huge fan! I love getting the girls together and coming to grinders, sitting on the patio, and enjoying cheap drinks and decent food. Pizza is the way to go here! This place is very unique and fun.

Their special was make your own mac and cheese, choose one meat and two veggies and my server raved about it and said they rarely had it as a special because it was so good. So I ordered it and chose pepperoni as my meat. I think they just waved it over my dish, the veggies only slightly more so. The mac and cheese itself was marginal. I've tried to like this place but I think they're trying too hard to be cool to worry about anything else.

As much as I try NOT to go here because I think the owner is a toolbag... I can't help but find myself drawn to the $2 mimosas and yummy food. (By the way, I recently found out you get a "MAN"mosa for $4!!!) The homemade chips are always made to perfection, the California BLT is delish with their maple bacon, fresh avocado and the bread is a perfect touch. I tried the 2 for 1 pizza and didn't see anything spectacular about it because it seemed very blah and thin... maybe that's just the quick fix for something cheap though. The breakfast burrito the other morning was killer. You can specialize it to your likings. The salsa was a little weird but it was good enough to eat without it. I'm attempting to get my friend to do the wing challenge... Depending on how bad she sucks at it, this place will get a 5. Yep, I'm THAT friend ;)

Had the California blt with the pear salad! The server John recommended it to me. I would also recommend to anyone that hasn't been here or tried it. The bacon on it was so awesome and delicious. They also have a potato casserole side dish that was so good we ordered a second helping of it. You can also wash it all down with their big selection of beer! Glad I finally got to try this place out.

Another great lunch. 1/2 grilled chicken sandwich with 1/2 spinach salad. Really tasty and filling. I would sill like a fountain drink instead of a can. On the positive, they offer Republic Of Tea. BTW, when the owner calls his table a "porn table," it is indeed a "porn table."

If Grinders is the surly little punk who hates authority and refuses to clean his room, Grinders West is his older, more mature sister who just graduated from art school. You see, Grinders is funky, unique and decidedly for adults. Instead of the fried this and processed cheese that of Grinders, Grinders West offers an incredibly fresh and delicious menu. I have had a variety of awesome sandwiches here, and when i'm feeling a little healthier, salads. There's an awesome ahi tuna salad, and also a killer pear salad. Also recommended is the spinach salad with strawberries and a raspberry vinaigrette. Today I had one that was more in tune with my vegetarian goals. It was a delicious bowl of mixed greens tossed with onion, sun dried tomato and a balsamic vinaigrette. Now, the selling point of this salad was supposed to be fried goat cheese. I got it....all two pieces of it. A very tasty salad, but i feel like the titular ingredient of a menu item should be a little more present. The decor of this place is pretty great. It's bright, airy, and interesting. Each table is a unique piece of art. I could describe them, but the fun is in looking at them for yourself. The bathrooms are behind the walls of glowing...well I don't know what they are. Glowing pods of some sort. The men's room has a really nicely painted multicolored wall, a very unique sink and an awesome ball of lights to illuminate whatever it is you may be doing. Going to the bathroom at Grinders West is like going to the bathroom in the future! One of the biggest complaints about Grinders was always the service, and for good reason. That being said, Grinders West is MUCH better. The servers are still somewhat edgy, so they maintain the Grinders aesthetic. That being said, they actually seem to know how to serve, and they seem to actually want to take care of you, thus earning some money. These people are nice as pie. If you want to go someplace downtown that is equal parts edgy and fresh, I don't see how you could go wrong with Grinders West

Featured on Food Network's "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives," Grinders in Crossroads District is known for its large outdoor patio space, great sandwiches and eclectic atmosphere. The aforementioned items drew me in for quick lunch on a Friday afternoon last week. Unfortunately, I was in for a looooooooooooooooooonnggg ride. After finding a table outside, I was hard pressed to find something I didn't want to eat on the menu. It all looked amazing. Hot wings, chili cheese tater tot pizza, Philly cheese steak sandwiches - a girl could fall in love! However, I waited and waited and waited for my order to be taken, a drink, a scrap of food to be thrown my way...anything. One hour later, my lunch was finally brought out. I couldn't go to a place called Grinders and not order a grinder. Needless to say, it was delicious. Melty mozzarella cheese, red sauce and big ol' Italian meatballs make up this sandwich. I dare you to take this thing head on - no side bites. You will be covered in meaty, saucy goodness. The Curried Chicken Sandwich was also good and contained large hunks of white chicken, grapes, walnuts and celery on ciabatta bread. The curry is such a nice touch, although parts of my face were stained yellow from the ferocity at which I devoured this sandwich. I waited so long for lunch I couldn't help myself. If you've got a lot of time on your hands and if you don't come hungry, you will love Grinders. The food and atmosphere are its best features, but the service is very, very bad.

Stopped in to Grinders West for a quick salad to go, and I totally wish this place was in St. Louis! The best thing about it is the art in the tables. Literally, in the tables underneath the glass. I saw sugar packet art, as well as army men designs! There's so much to look at and it's all so unique. The staff was super friendly and I went with the Mama's Lite Garden (lettuce, tomato, artichoke hearts, carrots, sliced red onions, cucumber, mushrooms, diced green peppers, celery, and sliced green olives.) Yum, right? I think this salad would have been so great with a different dressing... I got the balsamic vinaigrette and unfortunately I hated the taste of it. They have a ton of choices so just get anything but that one! I also got the hummus and pita bread, and it was good. SImple, but good. I do wish they could package it a little differently than putting the hummus straight in the to-go box instead of putting it in a cup or something first... it made it a little messy. I'd come back to this place if I was in KC, but I think I'd order something a little more adventurous!

A little higher priced on some items than I would expect, but the food was pretty good. I ordered the Philly Cheese Steak, and it was pretty close to the real thing. There was less grease than the original. They have a wing challenge if your up for it. If I remember they have four levels of hotness and the Molten is the 2nd lowest and I think that was just perfect for my taste. I want to be able to enjoy by food not loose all my taste buds. But if hot is your thing have at it!!! OMG the bacon, some people I went with didn't eat their bacon that was on their burger so I had the priveledge of eating it, and boy was it delightful probably the best thing I ate. It was very close to a candied bacon, with a smokey hint. YUM YUMMY on the bacon. Overall a good place to eat, but I couldn't see myself traveling all the way down town for it.

We wanted to take our out-of-town guests to some place special to KC. We decided to visit Grinders West for brunch. They were in for a bit of an adventure so were game to give it a shot. We expected the place would be crowded for Sunday brunch, but there only a few tables. Service was a little slow, but the portions were plentiful. We shared an order of biscuits and gravy. The price is great at $5.50, but the gravy consistency was lumpy and not very flavorful. The biscuits seemed pretty good. Two of us had omelets and were pleased. One had BLT with smoked gouda potato casserole and she loved it. I had a pastrami and egg sandwich on ciabatta. It was good, but would have preferred thicker cut on the meat and a fried egg instead of scrambled egg. The cheesy potatoes that came with my meal seemed to be prefab frozen kind of tatertots with a bit of cheese inside. They were edible, but not yummy. I was a bit sad that Grinders West didn't have as much artwork as the orginal Grinders next door, but we enjoyed the table dioramas. Overall, the visit was enjoyable and our guests have a special memory to take with them from KC.

My friend and I came here on a Thursday night about 8:30 pm after a Yelp Party downtown. We had talked too much and not eaten enough so we were HUNGRY! No drinks for us. Just water and FOOD! Wow. This was the place to come. The food was very good! First of all, their decor is very cool. Each table is a like a huge shadow box with art inside and every table is different. There are lit half-globes on the wall to the bathroom. And after reading some other reviews, I wish that I had gone to the bathroom. Evidently, the bathrooms are artsy also. So, I planned to get a grinder, until I found out they had a sandwich/salad combo and they have a BLT!!!!! I love me some BLT. The California BLT has a soft wheat berry bread, thick sweet bacon, a nice amount of tomatoes and fresh lettuce. It was a-mazing. I paired that with the spinach salad with strawberries, goat cheese, pecans and raspberry vinaigrette dressing. Double amazing! Everything was fresh and yummy. My friend ordered the Philly Cheese Steak - with provolone - not the authentic cheese whiz with a side of tots. She said her sandwich was great. I tried a couple of tots - deep fried crispy like I love them. Excellent! All in all - I was very pleasantly surprised. The service was good and the food was great. I will definitely be back. Maybe for Blues Traveler!

I've only eaten at the other part of Grinders, and I was planning on eating at Seed. I had a Muncharoo, that was about to expire. Saw that Seed was closed and drove to Grinder's West. Wow, there's art inside the tables, we were at Jessica Logston's Splenda table. I couldn't stop staring at it. There is a table with lighters, and pictures, one with sculpture under the glass. Fantastic decor. I had the veggie sandwich, and the bread is quite possibly the best I've ever had. The sandwich had portabella mushrooms, and cucumbers and green peppers and other vegetables. There was a aioli sauce that had a sweet taste, and the whole sandwich taste, just fit together. Behind us were these cool lights that changed colors. There are tall tables, and booth tables, and regular tables. The music could've been turned down a bit. Turn the music down, and I'd give it 5 stars. People were there with kids. It has the same menu as the Grinders right next to it. See my review, and eat at both. If you're coming to Kansas City, don't skip Grinders.

We were downtown last weekend for the KC Symphony Christmas show - and we needed something to eat that was quick, easy, and close to Kauffman Center, and Grinders was perfect! We stopped by around 6, and the place was basically empty - I ordered the chicken parmesan grinder with a side of fries, and we got a hummus appetizer to share. Positives: -Very filling, affordable, and good tasting food. -Great beer selections, I had quite possibly the best hefeweizen I've ever... Negatives: -Parking could be an issue at times Great food, that's fast and simple. I'll be back - for pizza next time!

I've been a patron of grinders since I moved to KC about five years ago. It's one of those places that you take out of towners because the menu is diverse, there is something for everyone. That ends today. I met up with some people for lunch this afternoon and ordered the fungi slice along with the smoked Gouda potato salad. That's exactly what I said, the Gouda potato salad. The waitress looked at me and says 'did you want the potato salad or the casserole?' Confused, because I was pretty sure I made no mention of the casserole since I had never even heard of it, I replied 'I'm not sure, I usually just get a small side of potato salad.' She then described the difference between the two to me like I was brain dead. I ended up restating that I wanted the potato salad. I dug in to my pizza when it arrived. 1/3 of the way up my fork snagged a hair. It happens, I removed it and went on. Take note: this resembled a head hair. About an inch up I ran into yet another hair. This one resembled a beard hair. Stiff and somewhat curly. So, that's different types of hair in my one slice of pizza. I stopped eating and when the waitress checked on out table I told her the situation. She had zero interest as she interrupted me by taking the pizza and immediately walking off giving me an insincere 'sorry 'bout that' on the way. She asked if I wanted anything else and I declined. She said 'ok' and briskly walked off. I was not charged for the pizza, but lacked the customer service skills to comp my side of potato salad that I did not eat after the hairs were found. Never a sincere apology, she could have cared less. The only reason this receiving two stars is for the food. Unfortunately, I'll never be able to have it again. Had I just been treated like a customer and not an inconvenience I would have returned eventually. * I am editing this review because apparently there is a potato salad and casserole and I'm too stupid to know the difference. It is not the waitresses fault for not politely correcting me, it's mine, for being a patron of this shit hole. I'm so sorry. I've had two employees harass and name call by messaging me. What a classy wait staff they've hired. Thank you for correcting me in the most trashy way possible.

I can't believe this place has such good reviews. I've eaten here once, and will never be back. My party ordered Philly cheese steaks since they seem to be a highly rated item here. They were not good. They lacked flavor, the meat was dry and it took forever to receive our food. Anyone who has been to Philadelphia knows that a proper Philly can be cooked and assembled in about 3 minutes tops. I have honestly had better steak and cheese sandwiches from Subway. The fries were also horrible, soggy and gross. All of the portions were very small. On top of that, service was atrocious, and there seemed to be an additional charge for everything imaginable. I'm surprised the restroom wasn't pay per use. The atmosphere is piecemeal kitsch. Over it! Next time I'm craving a Philly in KC, you'll find me at Pepperjax.

Well I can't come to a place called Grinders and not order a grinder (a toasted sub sandwich, made of either meatball or sandwich, with sauce and cheese on top). That being said, the wings and Philly Cheese here are legendary and I'll be trying them on my next visit. Sat out back on the "patio" and had some tots and a Boulevard Bully Porter with my meal. My friend got the chicken fajita salad, which looked great, and actually took longer to come out than my grinder. Weird.

OK....so I've been to the East, and to the West.....having come from South Jersey...well this IS where I go for a cheese steak. And guido, and meatball, and crab rangoon, and the foos ice cream...but I digress. Seriously, I know what a cheese steak should taste like, how it should feel in one's mouth. And you know, they do it right. I have tried the other cheese steaks in the area, especially after all of the advertisements--and still--it's Grinder's. To those who complain about slow service--yes, we had rhythm in NJ--a flow, speed--but let me say, when going into a restaurant, we also knew (and still know) what we wanted or needed. Grinder's is almost always busy, and perhaps in NJ style one should take the initiative to ask for what one wants.....When I come in, they know me, I say hello, and already they have an idea of what I am going to order. There are those who are new to the Grinder's experience--to the ones who sit and wait an hour...well..that is the exception and not the rule. Coming from the East Coast, if that were the case, politely go and ask for something--don't just sit there with your thumb up your Midwestern ass. ASK! Some people like to be waited on hand and foot--I don't go in being needy. I go in with a purpose--I enter with a smile and leave with a smile. To me, the food is excellent and service is quite good and friendly. Moral of the story--you never really can form a valid opinion with one visit. I know that there are some who seem distant at first, but do you know if they are busy, had a bad day, or perhaps another customer like you, pissed them off--hard to say. Give the benefit of the doubt. As for me, I have not had any problems, and I can say that Katie O. takes care of her customers in an edgy, fun, and yet, professional manner. There are no false pretenses here--no fake, wannabe atmosphere, not stuffy or arrogant--just people who work hard, care about their product, and who would like to see you again. This is not your wine and cheese symposium, but a real down to earth experience with many different types of people who come together to have a good time and yes, excellent food. Enjoy!

I tried Grinders West on a Saturday afternoon based on a recommendation from Terry at Weird Stuff Antiques. Good call antique man! The decor and buzz like a beehive greets you upon entry. Picture: Art, beer, chef autographs, skateboards, sculptures, stickers, young K.C. crowd and the smell of sausage. The pizza was great while the appetizers fell short. I ordered a slice of the Bengal Tiger. ROOOOAAARRR! Spicy and savory. Interesting and awesome. The crispy fried mushrooms were average as well as the breaded chicken breasts. Not much creatively the chef can do with those appetizers. No frills with paper plates and plastic silverware fit the vibe of Grinders West. The service was great even though they were very busy. I'll be back to try more of the menu and craft beers on tap.

I first took note of Grinders from an episode of DDD because I was proud to have a restaurant from my home state recognized. They showed a lot of crazy pizza concoctions. My taste buds aren't that adventurous, but I do love a good slice! There's a very "come as you are" attitude, which is always nice. My mom and I split a sausage, pepperoni, and goat cheese pizza which was delicious! My only complaint is that they didn't put enough goat cheese on it. The service was fine and we had a pleasant lunch. Also, you can never be too bored here because there's always something interesting to look at.

We popped in here on our route from St. Louis to Denver and thanks to Yelp it was a success. A bar on one side and a restaurant/cafe on the other with a stage and large patio area out back, this place seems like it would be great on a Friday or Saturday night. The salads we ordered we perfect considering you can add your own ingredients and the beer menu seemed pretty extensive although we didn't imbibe. It would have been great to experiment with the food here a little more but if I ever return to KC I'll surely add this to my list of places to re-visit.

We've been to Grinders for drinks on a First Friday, but had never actually eaten here until last weekend. It had been on the "must try" list for awhile, and I'm glad we were finally in the area and ready for some food! We opted to go into Grinders West, simply because it seemed a little busier at the time. We got a seat immediately, and enjoyed checking out our "shadowbox art" table (decorated with various bic lighters), as well as the artistic surroundings. I was worried that we were going to have to order off the breakfast menu, as we sort of arrived at the tail end of brunch, but happily we were given lunch menus as well, and had the option of ordering off either menu. The drink specials included $2 mimosas, which I was NOT going to say no to. And for $2, what a deal! The mimosa was not only very tasty (a good mix - plenty of fizz and juice), but also a generously sized portion. No champagne glasses here - we got good sized stemless wine glasses nearly filled to the top. We wanted to try a couple of different things, so we ordered a cheese steak (with provolone - no cheese wiz this time around) and a 10" Bengal Tiger pizza. The cheese steak came out way before the pizza, so it was a good thing we were sharing both, and it was great - large, and a good combination of flavors. I don't know if it's the most authentic cheese steak this side of Philly, but it was good. I like, too, that you don't *have* to get onions, as a lot of places just have a peppers and onions mix, and you don't really have a choice but to pick out the onions if you're not a fan of them. The Bengal Tiger pizza took awhile (the cheese steak was long gone by the time it arrived), but it was worth it. A little bit greasy, but really, REALLY good. I did have to spice it up just a little bit with some red pepper flakes, and I found myself wondering what it would be like with the addition of some sweet chili oil, but all in all, I really enjoyed it and would get it again, no question. My husband preferred the cheese steak, but I would have to say that the pizza was the selling point for me. Service was good - quick and friendly - and we thought the prices were more than reasonable for the amount and quality of food. I'm definitely a fan, and we'll definitely be back.

I had my first Grinders experience a couple of months ago during Sunday brunch. All I can say is that the Baja burger is delicious and I want more of it. The crinkle cut fries (which are extra, nothing here comes with a side) were subpar, but that's my only complaint. The service was just right, the decor is just loud enough to catch your eye and that level of hole in the wall that makes you feel comfortable, and my server (who was a male) wearing short shorts gave me just the laugh I needed early Sunday afternoon.

Decent food, had a couple slices of pizza. Had a couple beers, they weren't very exciting. Weird part was my waitress left mid meal. End of shift I guess but she didn't say anything to me nor anyone else so I sat for 30 minutes before going up to the counter to order another slice. They were surprised I was even there! Oops. I tried going to Grinders first but there was not a seat in the house.

Let me just start by saying that I'm a Grinders fan. I've been a Grinders fan for YEARS! We used to go every Sunday like a religion. I've told complete strangers that they need to try Grinders. Today, I am NOT a Grinders fan. In fact, I am so disgusted that I may never go again just based on today's experience. And it ONLY because of my Grinder's love affair in the past that I am not giving it 1 star today. First off, I ordered my lunch to go. I've done this numerous times, so this is no news. Second, they charged me for a to go container!!! You heard me. 50 cents was my thank you/punishment for choosing their establishment over oodles of others in the Crossroads area. This should be overhead and typical costs for running a business. Next they charged me $2.50 for substituting fries for chips with my BLT sandwich. I've done this before and a subbed side was a $1 upcharge. THAT I can understand, but $2.50?? And they were cold and lifeless!! The bread on my "toasted" BLT was soggy. And, the second half of my BLT only had about 40% coverage of the B, the L and the T. OVER IT!!!

We went on a Saturday, just in time for brunch and I must say I was very impressed. Everything is fresh and tasty:) The prices are very reasonable and it was a perfect stop for lunch. This salad was so refreshing. Pear Salad Fresh spring mix tossed in Champagne vinagrette, topped with dried cranberries, candied pecans, Gorgonzola cheese, fresh sliced pears drizzled with balsamic glaze. The perfect salad to go with a hot and balmy day. Roasted Chicken Sandwich With spinach, balsamic vinegar, pesto, tomato and fresh mozzerella on a hoagie roll-this was really good! I am not a pesto gal but I ate it. It married beautifully with everything going on with the sandwich. I think that it as to be in there to provide the perfect balance for the taste of this. Biscuits and gravy (1/2 order) for 2.95! - My 4 year old daughter ordered this and she had quite a bit for a 1/2 order. It was soooooo good. Fried goat cheese salad. Crispy medallions of fried goat cheese on a bed of mixed greens with red onions, toasted walnuts, red grapes and sun-dried tomatoes with balsamic vinagrette. I love me some goat cheese and when you fry those babies up...can I get a, "Oh yeah!" Double fist pump? I wanted to take more than the 1/4 of a piece that my husband let me have. That is a tasty treat!! Our waitress was super cool and really helped us out by recommending items. We will be back for sure.

FYI, I called at 11pm on Tuesday night to order take-out & they said they had already done last call. So FOOD SERVICE FINISHES BEFORE 11PM!!!! *NOTE*~!!! Okay, so we tried a second time to go to Grinders, Sunday at 10:15pm (winter hours they're open till 11pm, Summer 12am - according to their website), but we called Juuuust to make sure. And? They're closed. So, if you want late night dining, Grinders isn't worth the trouble.

Although the categories for this restaurant say "chicken wings, pizza and sandwiches", with the addition of the Grinders West menu to both sides (Grinders serves the same menu), there are a lot more options for the discerning palate to choose from. The famous Philly is available in a veggie version, but The Veggie sandwich (grilled portobello, zucchini, peppers and a delicious garlic aioli) is one of the best sandwiches on the menu. The pizza is excellent - I'd recommend ordering a whole pizza as individual slices can be hit or miss. The Fun Gi (mushroom pizza with white sauce) is a strong contender for best pizza in KC. Beyond that, there are some great salad options above and beyond standard house/caesar offerings. Besides solid food offerings, the tap/bottle selection is one of the better ones in Kansas City, and with a make-your-own Bloody Mary bar on Sundays, it's a great spot any day of the week.

Rude, chaotic and slow - all vibes I can totally deal with when the food is a.mazing and my glass is continuously filled with beverage. The food was decent but I'm not waxing poetic about it and my mouth is not salivating with this review (which has happened on occasion, mind you). With all of the options in the area, I'm not likely to hang out here again.

This review is about the service, not the food - we never got that far. Went with 2 friends after First Fridays this past weekend and expected it to be busy with such a crowd. Did not expect to wait 25 minutes for a server to even come to our table (even after flagging another one down to ask for water, which he never brought). We were told they were extremely busy but not understaffed although our server admitted she had 12 tables!?! When she finally did get over to us we put in our orders. An HOUR later, while everyone around us got their food she promised twice it was coming right up. When we complained about such a wait (it had been an hour and a half at this point), she said she had no control over it... We finally couldn't take it anymore, our hungry bellies were mad and irritable. We got up to leave and my boyfriend went to pay for the few beers he had had. When he asked our server (because yes, he had to go get up to find her to pay) how much he owed, she said she didn't know because our ticket had been LOST!!! So the food she kept promising us would be right up hadn't even been made yet!?! Totally unacceptable. I understand a busy restaurant when there's an event such as First Fridays, but staff it appropriately or don't seat the customers. I was appalled at such service and will probably never go back. No apology was ever given to us by anyone and in fact they seemed irritated that we were so irritated!? Bad Grinders, very bad.

Yet again, everything was outstanding. All the food everyone ordered at the table came out perfect and tasty. I dont know how they make such good crab wontons but jesus h. tits, they are outstanding. Try anything, honestly. Cant go wrong. Perfect tots, btw. I get them as a sub for chips, dip them in ranch, and rub them on my nrples. Not really. But they are good tots.

Well I have been here 2 times don't know who the owner is. My first experience was good minus the girl who told us to sit anywhere when we had no idea what to do and she had an attitude to her voice. I had 1/2 reuben and goat cheese salad. I found a big piece of onion in my salad and pointed it out to one of the guys just suggested they might watch that because people don't like hunks of onion usually. We went back yesterday with our kids because it was a decent time and the same guy with glasses was there and I asked if he remembered us and he said yeah you complained about the onion. I tried to laugh this off because I had brought more people back in to spend money. By the way my Philly did not look like the picture it actually looked pretty empty like half full and not this much cheese. He didn't even ask what cheese I wanted he just put provolone on it. It had no taste so I asked for the cheese whiz and he said he wouldn't charge me for it REALLY???? Like I would have paid for it? I took 2 bites and after getting fat I spit it out and laid the half sandwich to the side. He never took any plates or asked how anything was what a TOOLBAG. I actually gave him the chance by going to the bathroom. T hey were not busy I think there were 2 other tables. I will not go back. If a place cannot be consistent and even ask how the food is or if everything is OK I'll take my money elsewhere no biggie. That's why we eat at home it's healthier and better. My husband makes a better Philly with onions, green peppers and mushrooms.

We went to grinders west for the first time on Sunday the 3rd and found it to be awesome ! We had a great waitress , Katie o. She was very knowledgeable about the beers and the menu and gave some great suggestions. We will definitely be back, the food was great!

I have actually eaten at Grinders before but it was after seeing a DDD episode and didn't have a great experience. This visit was for a holiday party on a Friday afternoon. One of the participants arrived early to grab the only long table in the place!! We had multiple appetizers. Ragoons, hummus, and Big Ass Fries. Lot's of beer - which is a huge selection - except for what I wanted!! (Rolling Rock). Still trying to keep it light but I decided not to be ww conscious on this meal! I had the pizza of the day and the slice was HUGE. Many of my co workers had the meatball grinder or the Philly cheese steak. There was not a complaint amongst them! The waitress was awesome. She dealt with the fact that our table of 10 came and went at all times during our 4 hours there! I look forward to going back and trying more menu items! On a side note, the owner of the restaurant, Stretch, had been in Chicago the same week I visited the KC Grinders. He was part of a group of chefs going to military bases and cooking for our troops. My son, in Chicago, got to have lunch with Stretch and was SOOO appreciative of his time and his food! Way to go Stretch!

Heard about Grinders on the Food Network. Since I was in the area, I thought I would walk next door and check out Grinders West. Amazing. Brilliant concept: Two restaurants with separate style and menu, meet in the back with outdoor seating, metal sculptures and a stage and plot of land for concerts in the evenings. Perfect atmosphere with blues music playing, while people sit on picnic benches in the sun and eat good food. This is what we ordered and it was fabulous. (On weekends both menus are available at both locations and outside. Pizza is usually only served at Grinders.): PIZZA - Goldberg "Phats" - This gourmet favorite starts with a delicious pesto sauce topped with smoked salmon, capers, and cream cheese. Going back to when we first arrived - hence only the four stars - Service was amazing when we walked into Grinders West. I thought the guy was going to give us hugs! I wish I got his name. However, serving staff outside was a different story. We felt like a waste of their time. No smiles. No consideration. Service knocked a star off. But other than that, the experience was great. The decor in Grinders West was very cool, artsy and modern. I took a lot of pictures of the custom made tables and wall lights. I would definitely recommend Grinders and Grinder West to people in KC and people passing through KC.

I am so jealous of everyone who works close enough to Grinders/West to enjoy their food for lunch. Since I work in South Kansas City, rarely do I get to try the tastiness that Downtown and the Crossroads areas have to offer. Fortunately, I had an errand to run that way over my lunch break the other day, so I made the (wise) decision to try Grinders West. Grinders West is the younger, classier sister of the original Grinders (the tatted up rebellious one). I didn't have time to stay and dine in, so here's a review of my carry-out experience. I called ahead to order a half sandwich/half salad combo. Parking wasn't as bad as I was afraid it was going to be. There is a gravel lot across the street that provides enough parking for a busy lunch crowd. When I walked up to the register, I was greeted promptly, was taken care of quickly, and was out the door in no time. My half California BLT was deeeelish! The bacon on the BLT was some of the best bacon I've ever had. It wasn't overly salty and actually had a bit of meat to it. It was as sweet as it was salty -- perfect combo. My pear salad was just as delicious -- very likely to be my favorite salad. The "stankiness" of the gorgonzola cheese paired nicely with the tartness of the craisins and the subtle sweetness of the pears. With the added sweet crunchiness of the candied pecans, the salad couldn't have been more perfect -- all finished off with a divine champagne vinaigrette. They serve the dressing on the side in a ramekin so your food travels safely with you to your final destination. I should also point out that they have a very informative and user-friendly website. I think restaurants are starting to realize that most diners nowadays will likely preview a place before going out, so having a functioning website is key.

Grinders West is like the more family friendly version of Grinders. No one writes on the walls in Grinders West, but it's still artsy and funky. The tables are all essentially shallow boxes with glass tops that they allow artists to fill/design, and they change periodically. Grinders West also has TVs, which makes it a nice place to watch sports, but enjoy something other than typical bar food. The service at Grinders West is more attentive and nicer than at Grinders (with a few exceptions -- Grinders does have a few good servers). It's still going to be a girl whose real hair color is a mystery, and perhaps has piercings other than her ears, but she's not going to slam your food on the table, or treat you like a moron when you ask for a beer they are out of. In fact, at Grinders West, you might get cups with a little taste of two other IPAs you might like since they were out of Racer 5 that day. Grinders West serves soup, salad and sandwiches, but you can also order anything from the Grinders side, thanks to a pass-through window cut in the wall between the two restaurants. My typical order is the pear salad and an Ace Perry Cider (The cider is from the Grinders side). The pear salad is baby greens, crumbled gorgonzola, candied walnuts, dried cranberries and sliced pear tossed with a tart dressing and then drizzled with a balsamic reduction. It's just delicious. I also really like their cobb salad. I ate that last summer during the Split Lip Rayfield set of the Reverend Horton Heat show. And then danced myself silly once the Rev came on. The roast beef sandwich is also good, my beau has ordered that several times, and I always marvel at the sheer deliciousness of sauteed onions on roast beef. Also, the pickle spear that comes with the sandwiches is unusually crisp and dill-y. Grinders West sells their meats and cheeses from a deli case, which adds another layer of awesomeness to the location. They also have their tasty potato salad in there for sale by the pound, among other things. I'd also like to mention that they do weekday specials, and also have an impressive wine selection. I only like very specific wines, but if you are more sophisticated than me, definitely check them out. When I was there most recently they were having a wine close out and offering bottles for $20. You also don't have to finish the whole bottle, they can apparently re-cork it and seal it up in such a way that you are allowed to take it with you. Pretty cool. So...if you aren't feeling totally rock and roll, but still want something delicious and different in the Crossroads, check out Grinders West.

The food here has been generally very good. My last visit to Grinders West was just awful though. The service was so poor that we ended up paying for the one dish ( a salad) that was brought to the table, and leaving. The server was so tragically inept and bitchy I was amazed. She was so confused. She was taking the wrong orders to all the tables she was servicing that night. She brought me a regular Cola, and I'm diabetic, so if I hadn't caught it, then I could have gotten very sick. I always double check before I drink something in a restaurant. It's just very irritating when it happens. When I asked to talk to a manager, they said they would go get her. They just blew us off and never bothered to find her. When we told a guy making salads about our unpleasant situation trying to get some food and service, we got a huge dose of attitude. I won't go back. We used to be regulars because of the food and location. The SERVICE sucks!

Go here on any night, Monday night most of all. On Monday night they have the most awesome Hungarian gentleman that cooks different dishes (one each night, based on his whim I think) that you should not miss! This place is great for any dish, salads, sandwiches, water melon soup, anything. Its a great lunch bite or evening stop over. One of our favorite

The first visit to Grinders was because they graciously hosted a kick-off party for an American Diabetes Association event. The pizzas were thin and delicious and that was my "go-to" order each time I went back to Grinders. My first order on the non-pizza part of the menu was the original Philly and it was huge, flavorful and better than anything I ate in Philly...with the possible exception of one at a dive bar called Bert's (now closed). I chose a half sandwich and tater tots, which were crispy and hot. Yum! I recently had the roasted chicken sandwich. Oh my! Fresh mozzarella, pesto, spinach accompanied the chicken. Our waitress said it was her favorite sandwich and I wasn't disappointed either. I suppose I need to work my way through Grinder's entire menu - lucky me! The decor is interesting and perhaps "hip", though I'm probably too old to really know what falls into that definition. I've never been there when the place is extremely crowded and the waitstaff has been attentive and friendly. The wine selection is limited; however, the beer selection appears to be widely varied and includes seasonal brews.

Usually when I'm talking about grinders it's poop-related. However, this food is not poop...at least not at the time you're eating it. It's delicious. Plus they make the best BLT I've ever had.

This is the first time I have ever written a poor review. I am a huge fan of the original grinders. Everything about that place is great from the food to the beer selection to the service. I also don't pull the "I'm a server" card but I just did. The service was terrible. She didn't know what the tea selection was available, she brought out one plate out of six 25minutes before the rest and forogt two items on plates once they came out. I understand it's The kitchens responsibility to plate things properly but if it's overlooked, the server should correct it. Once everything came out it was cold. The single star is because it's connected to grinders. Also the the bread pudding is made with rye!!!!

I stopped in for a late lunch and had the California BLT... not bad and the beer selection was decent but pricey. The custom artwork tables were interesting definitely a change of pace from your average sandwich or pizza place.

So I decided I have to review the two Grinderses separately. Because even though you can always order off both menus, their vibes are so incredibly different. And I have to admit I love love love Grinders West. First off, you walk in, and below the glass are various and constantly changing displays, from Adam and Eve (full on awesome) to a jagillion (likely not 10,000) paper cranes, my personal favorite. Secondly, you have an awesome beer selection, as you can get anything from the other side. And everyone who works there actually knows what she's talking about beer-wise. I sometimes hesitate to ask for recommendations, but not at Grinder's. Then we have the specials, which include both food and drink, and usually sound pretty amazing. And let's face it, they have a night of super cheap tacos and Mexican beer- my Austin self is totally pleased. But my New York self is even more pleased. Because when you order roast beef at Grinders, you are going to get a pile of pinky-red meat, stacked up high and delicious. One of the specials I've had involved bleu cheese and tomato, and it was one of the most delicious things I've eaten lately, especially when paired (compliments to our waitress for the rec, once again) with a coffee stout. The next time, we sat outside, and I gave in to my NY instincts and ordered the pastrami. Let me just admit here that I don't know what pastrami that isn't pastrami even comes from, and I don't want to know. I'm better off not knowing, so that I can return and enjoy this with all its mustardy, rye bread goodness. I have heard great things about the roasted chicken, as well. And their sides are pretty delicious. The olive salad is exactly what it sounds like, but for a lady who wants the amount of olive juice in her dirty martinis to outdo the vodka, it made me pretty happy. And the jicama slaw is good but not the most exciting. Texans still have a hold on the way to make jicama taste like something more than nothing. Mostly, I haven't had sandwiches like this since I left NY. The meat tastes, well, like actual meat. They stack it up high and slather the bread with mustard, cheesey goodness, mayo, with delightful abandon. The bread itself is worth the trip downtown from Westport, and we actually asked where they get it. I could have that rye bread anyday. So despite my attempts to be newly fiscally responsible and well-behaved and make my own sandwiches at home, Grinder's West wins. And hey, at this point, I'm down for anywhere that doesn't feel like it's KC. And this doesn't. PS The bathrooms are adorable. Just a side note, as that doesn't really affect the experience. But hey, they are, and it's a nice bonus.

The food was very good. I got the "Pick 2" of 1/2 roasted chicken sandwich and a grilled goat cheese salad. Both were very tasty with no flavor being overbearing. Hats off to the chef! A co-worker built his own sandwich of smoked turkey and bacon on grilled sourdough, and he said it was great. Everything was presented very well. A satisfying amount of lunch on 1/2 a sandwich and small salad. "Porn table"? It's more stupid dirty humor than anything. I might have missed something b/c I was uncomfortable enough not to linger long at the table. All I noticed was a couple of nude, well-endowed dolls that I think(?) were made out of panty-hose. It doesn't belong under the glass that serves as your table. Plenty passed the chance to sit at the table for the hour that we were there. Not "art" but simply poor taste. Definitely too uncomfortable to sit at with a classy date.

So my wife and I got a new Vespa and figured why not try a "Vespa" friendly eatery. And, while Grinders West is Vespa friendly, it's their food that is even better. If you've read my posts before you know that I've yelped about Succotash, and my fandom of their food, but lack of excitment for the atmosphere. Grinders is the perfect place to grab a casual breakfast. They have a $5 bloody mary bar that even comes with bacon flavored pickles as a choice. But it's their brown sugar glazed bacon that had us both in ahh... For the two of us to have breakfast the tab was only $14--no drinks. I suggest checking it out. Beware--on Sunday's the only start servng at 10.

I want to give this place 3.5 stars. The food is pretty good. There is a good selection of various sandwiches and salads, as well as build your own options for both. They also feature 3 soups along with a couple daily soups that change. It's rather cold out today, so I was hoping to get soup and a sandwich. I was completely cock blocked by the waitress though, who insisted that your sandwich side cannot be soup, despite a cup of soup costing less than some of the sides you can choose from to go with your sandwich. I could have gotten half a sandwich and soup, but I'm fat and wanted the whole sandwich. The tables are interesting...glass tops with something interesting going on under them. Our table had a bunch of ears or corn with faces on them. I did not explore the alcohol options, and the glasses they give you are annoying little half-glasses. Three of us had water and our waitress had to make several laps with a pitcher to make refills. If you order a soft drink, it will come in a can with a half-glass of ice. Good food. Annoying quirks.

We came with a group of 5 and it was a disaster. One order came out 15 minutes before any other order. The beer took 10 min to come out. The food took 45 min to come out and tasted extremely average. If they are busy. Go elsewhere. Original grinders is much better. Bar atmosphere with bar food, unlike Grinders west that tries to be a restaurant but falls short.

First visit was 3/11/12 with wife and son. Excited to see a decent selection of brews when we were seated! Took 10 minutes to have a waitress stop by our table. Drinks took 20 minutes after I reminded waitress. Next we got our fries and wings (apps) along with my Philly(entree). 5 minutes later my wife's salad arrived. 5 minutes after that my son's 2 slices showed up to the table. Food was delicious but service was terrible. But they were busy. So wife is out of town and I didn't feel like cooking. My son wanted to go to Grinders last night 3/21/12 and I wanted to give them a second chance. 30% of tables occupied. Drinks arrived fast. Order taken quickly. Wings and fries for apps(again), Philly and 2 slices for entrees(again). And here we go again! Fries and Philly come out first. Then wings 5 min later. Then slices 5 mins after that! So I ask for a manager. 10 minutes go by and no manager. Stop waitress and ask her where is the manager I requested. She informed me he is making pizzas and will be out soon. Ridiculous! Manager never apologized and said so the food just got mixed up? Yep buddy! AGAIN! He said pizza comes from the other side so it takes longer. I said I can understand but neither tonight or on 3/11 did the waitress point that out. Manager offered to buy me a beer. I declined. I want to love this place but now I can't. Bad service twice and a Manager that had to finish his pies 10 minutes before coming to my table. If you want some good food, a good beer selection, and can tolerate horrible service then this is a place to try.

Alwasy have enjoyed Grinders so we decided to check out Grinders West. Everything was great, try Tuesday night steak night if you're inclined I know I will again soon. If steak isn't your speed don't worry theres plenty of other delicious items to enjoy, from the fresh deli fare to a tasty selection of sides. Don't mis it!

The Hubs and I have been to Grinders a couple of times and decided to try Grinders West on our date night. We both ordered the chicken sandwich which was awesome. We took it apart to try to guess all of the ingredients so we could recreate it at home! My goat cheese salad was okay if you like goat cheese which apparently I don't. It tasted "musty" and a few pieces of lettuce were very wilted. That's the price you pay at a restaurant that buys it's food daily and has no fridge. I like the idea of knowing it wasn't there yesterday but it was still wilted (shrug) The best part of ALL was the side of smoked gouda potatoes we got as an appetizer. WOW. We did actually recreate this at home! Absolutely try it if it's on the menu when you go. The down side was they have a limited beverage selection and the soda is served in the can with an ice filled cup. Very Southwest airlines. It's funky, the waitresses are fun, the food is good and you should try it at least once.

The Pastrami sandwich was awesome and the fried goat cheese salad was awesome. I got the "pick 2" which ended up filling but not violating my stomach. The aesthetics of the place were cool and awesome, as was the staff. There is a gross table but it's not a "porn" table. I'm giving GW four stars as opposed to five because I have only been there once. If I had to sum this place up with one word it would be, yep you...

Wow....the Reuben here is so good! It's served hot and has a great amount of dressing on it. Everything I saw come out of the kitchen looked delicious. I've had the pizza next door and it was delicious as well. I can't wait to try other items. The ambiance is good and on Thursdays they have three tacos for $1.00 with $2.50 Mexican beers.

The decor here is cool and the pizza is good. Its a nice alternative to KC's BBQ scene and probably one of the only decent restaurants in the area. All the tables have different toys and things in them so definitely look down when you're here.

I arrived early and had to wait a while for my friend, but once we were both seated we made our decision on the Philly Pizza. We waited almost an hour and the waitress asked if we were ready for our checks... I responded that we hadn't even received our pizza! Plus she had never refilled our drinks. I think if I hadn't been there to catch up with an old friend I would have walked out! In the end, the pizza was very good and our waitress took 50% off. I would like to give them a 2nd try but I rarely get over to that area of town and when I do there are just so many other locations that won't forget they have a customer sitting in front of them!

Came into town late and and wanted to find somewhere with good food and drinks, decided to check it out and was not disappointed! Amazing food and drinks. We got there around 10:30pm on a Wednesday night, had crab ragoon app which were better than most Chinese places, crossroads pizza was a great choice, homemade crust was delicious, within walking distance of the Sheraton where we stayed. Will be visiting this place again! Would like to go back for a concert night, they get great bands from the looks of it.

I really, really wanted to love Grinders. I have heard all about it and how it is a wonderful place to eat. I went on a Friday night around 8 pm; there was a concert out back so we could not eat outside, but the door man told us we could eat inside, so we decided to stay. Grinders West was not at all crowded, so we were able to find a table for our party of 6 with little difficulty (that came when trying to get the food). The atmosphere is great...I love the art and the "art tables," I do not love the service. Our waitress started off well, getting us all waters and giving us time to look at the menu. She did not have a drink list, but pull a hand written list out of her order binder and gave that to us to look at--since there were new beers that we not on the chalk board menu posted on the wall (which we could not see from our table and was only discovered by someone in our party after we had ordered). The highlight was that Grinders will allow you to taste the beer before ordering it, so that was a ray of light in an otherwise cloudy visit; unfortunately, on event nights all beer is served in plastic cups...even when you are paying $5-7 (prices not posted) for 12 ounces:( After a significant wait, our drinks arrived and it was time to order food. I ordered the half turkey philly with everything. My companions ordered beef phillies, pizza and, oops, nothing, since the waitress left the table before getting everyone's order--that's right, one person in our group did not have their order taken (we were sitting and a longer table and the waitress stood at one end to take the order---she just left before she was done). When this was mentioned to another waitress, she said she would send her back, but she did not return for ~10 minutes. Other than this snafu, we also had to repeatedly request water---they were not super bus,y and other waitresses were circling with water, but did not come to our table and our waitress did not stop by with any regularity to check on us. The food was OK-- my sandwich was good, but there was an up-charge for some of the toppings, but it was not clear which ones (since it was not listed on the menu); I had onion, peppers, provolone, cheese whiz, jalapenos and banana peppers. The pizza some of my companions got was just ok as well; the wings were not as spicy as touted by the waitress. The fries were directly out of the freezer bag, to the fryer and then to a holding bin--they were cold and bland. If I were to go back, I would get my sandwich (only) to go!

Was here for a concert and the New York style pizza was very good. But dude, get an AC unit. There is no reason people should be sopping wet with sweat just because the kitchen is open. If you install it, we will come...........back.

While the food here is always great, there are times when the service just isn't. But that's all I'll say, so as not to dwell or name names. The Reuben is ridiculous. It has jalapeño kraut on it. The pastrami is fantastic, too. The tater tots are worth the calories. On the weekends, there are $5 bloody marys. The BLT is nothing short of fantastic. Grinders West aims for delicious food for when you're really hungry. They have a better beer selection than most, and the bar next door, with a pared down menu of pizza, calzones, and bar food is open LATE. Can't complain. The evening service could be a little happier and quicker, but we'll still be back!

We've eaten here several times and never been disappointed. Oddly enough, for a place featured on the Food Network for over-the-top pizza, I adore their salads. They are each delicious but I especially like the fried goat cheese salad - very creative and all the different flavors work together even without the addition of the goat cheese (although I would still love more of it). The roasted chicken and california BLT are favorites for sandwiches; my husband enjoys the philly and grinder. The last time, we even had our kids with us. Even though it's not a typical kid-friendly restaurant, several of the appetizer choices worked well for them (the hummus with pita and carrots as well as the funky dough). Our server was really helpful with them and that was much appreciated.

Yes, I have mentioned in another post that I am a big fan of Grinders. My husband and I needed a quick bite to eat before heading to a benefit downtown and landed at Grinders, again... I ordered off the Grinders West menu for the first time as we. Their sandwich menu was calling my name. I had the California BLT. It was superb. Never thought of using a honey smoked bacon on a blt before but it worked w/all the flavors. Sweet bacon, tomato, lettuce, chipolte mayo, and avacado. Fresh and Delish. I love you Grinders, but am looking forward to trying more of the menu items next door!

Had the Philly sandwich. While it was good, I think PhillyTime located in Parkville is better. The service was good and the restaurant was clean. Parking is on the city street or there is a gravel lot across the street which can accommodate about 20 cars.

Oh my god this place has some ROCK STAR sandwiches!! I highly recommend the Cuban Pork if it's available...which for me is more like seeing a shooting eff'ing star because they run out so much! So good! The place is also decorated pretty cool, VERY different from the original Grinders...less grimy and every table is an art piece. Cool thing is you can order beer and food off the orig Grinders menu if you like and you share the back patio area.

Weird.
